Eternal Rules to a Happy Life

28 Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant-- the Ten Commandments.
29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the LORD.
30 When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him.
Exodus 34:28-30(NIV)

Eternal Rules of Happiness

1.  You shall have no other gods before me.
2.  You shall not make for yourself an idol.
3.  You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God.
4.  Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
5.  Honor your father and your mother.
6.  You shall not murder.
7.  You shall not commit adultery.
8.  You shall not steal.
9.  You shall not witness falsely against your neighbor.
10.  You shall not desire your neighbors belongings.

There are parallel Ten Commandments or Eternal Rules of Happiness in the instruction for yoga and meditation. They are called Yama and Niyama, the things you should not do and things you should do. It is a similar list:

Yama
1.   Nonviolence
2.  Truth
3.  Freedom from greed
4.  Control of sensuality
5.  Not desiring what another has

Niyama
6.   Cleanliness
7.  Contentment
8.  Austerity or solemnity
9.  Self-study
10.  Devotion

All religions have rules of conduct that make life better and help us to avoid unhappiness. In Self-Realization Fellowship we use these as an essential first step for yoga (union with God.) After the observance of yama-niyama we can go on to practice further steps to directly experience God’s presence. We can begin to practice proper posture in meditation and other practices to get very still, calm, and concentrated..
