Upcoming Special Services

We have several upcoming Commemoration Services.  On Thursday March 6 from 7 to 9 pm we will hold a Commemoration Service in honor of the Mahasamadhi of Paramahansa Yogananda.  On Sunday March 9 from 8:30 to 9:30 am we will hold a Commemoration Service in honor of the Mahasamadhi of Sri Yukteswar.

Anyone who is well enough acquainted with the SRF teachings to understand the significance of the Guru-disciple relationship is welcome to attend.  These are great spiritual occasions on which the blessings of an illumined master are stronger than on other days of the year. Devotees who attend these ceremonies with the right attitude will reap spiritual benefits and find their high resolutions strengthened.

Please remember to bring a flower and a donation. The flower is a symbol of devotion to God and the SRF Gurus, the donation is a symbol of loyalty to the cause of SRF. Remember not to smell the flower and thus “take” some of the offering meant for God.

On Friday March 21, we will hold a Good Friday Service from 7 to 9 pm.

The above events will be held at the Pilgrim Chapel.

We would also like to remind you that on Easter Sunday our Service will be held from 9 to 10 am rather than the usual time.

Prayer Service for World Peace

The Kansas City Meditation Group of Self-Realization Fellowship warmly invites you to attend a special meditation service dedicated to prayer for world peace.  The service will be held on Thursday, March 13 from 7 to 9 pm at the Pilgrim Chapel.

Often this seems to be a world in crisis.  By attending a group meditation focused on world peace, we help create a powerful vibration of peace and love as we serve God, Guru, and our human family.

As Paramahansa Yogananda wrote in the Aims and Ideals of Self-Realization of Fellowship, we will meet:
- To spread a spirit of brotherhood among all peoples by teaching the eternal basis of their unity; kinship with God.
- To demonstrate the superiority of mind over body, of soul over mind.
- To overcome evil by good, sorrow by joy, cruelty by kindness, ignorance by wisdom.
- To serve mankind as one’s larger Self.

Please join us as we send prayers of peace and love to all the world.  All are welcome.

Cancellation of Services Due to Inclement Weather

We have had several snow days in the last few months, and as a result the Managing Council has found it necessary to cancel Service.  These decisions are never easy, but the Services were cancelled because we felt that the weather was such that it was unsafe to travel to the Chapel.

We do however wish to ensure that the Chapel is opened and that Services continue whenever possible even during inclement weather.  As long as we have a Managing Council Member or other volunteer devotee who feels they can safely get to the Chapel to open on Sunday morning, Service will be held.  We wish to emphasize however that no one should feel that they must get to the Chapel if they are not comfortable with driving conditions.  If you are scheduled to serve and you are not comfortable with driving you should notify a member of Managing Council who will ensure that your duties are covered for you.  NO ONE SHOULD FEEL COMPELLED TO ATTEND DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER whether they are serving or not.  Please use your best judgment in your decision to attend regardless of whether we officially cancel.  While the Managing Council wants to ensure we hold Service whenever possible, it is also of utmost importance that no one be put at risk because they feel an obligation to attend.

Due to the increasing size of our group, we have found that it no longer is practical to notify all members by phone in the event of a cancellation.  Instead, should it be necessary to cancel Service, a notice will be placed on the group’s voice mail at 816-512-6205 no later than 6:30 am on Sunday morning.  In addition we will place a notice on Channel 5 and on the Web site www.kcmeditation.com. Please check one of these sources if you believe service may be cancelled due to inclement weather.

Should a Thursday night meditation need to be cancelled, the same procedure will be followed by 5:30 pm.

India Night Celebration

Our annual India Night Dinner celebrating our Guru’s homeland was held at the Lenexa Community Center on Saturday, February 2nd.  We had approximately 40 people in attendance and we all enjoyed the divine fellowship and delicious food.  The tables were beautifully decorated with Indian tablecloths and centerpieces, and a special table was set up with fun Indian coloring activities for the children.  Many devotees even came dressed in their Indian clothing!

We also held a silent auction as a kick-off to our fundraising for the children’s scholarship fund.  Some of the silent auction items included foot massages for you and three friends, 4 hours of gardening services by a professional gardener, acupuncture, a handmade necklace, handmade scarves, and a variety of other items.  Special thanks to all the devotees who donated to the auction.  We raised $800!

Volunteer Opportunities
There are many volunteer opportunities at the Kansas City Meditation Group, including Service Readers, Harmonium Players, Ushers, Flower Committee, Retreat Committee, Social Committee, P.A. System setup, Sunday School Teachers and Assistants.  If you are interested in serving, please speak to a member of the Managing Council.

Children’s Scholarship Fund

This year, the Kansas City Meditation Group will again be offering a scholarship program for parents who are sending their children to the SRF Summer Youth Program held in the San Bernardino Mountains in California.  The girls program is held June 21 to 28, and the boys program is June 28 to July 5.  For more information on the program go to http://www.srf-yogananda.org/yp.

Parents who plan to send their children to camp and would like to participate in the scholarship program are asked to speak to Wendy MacDonald Savoy no later than February 29, 2008.  Once we know how many children will be attending, we will set our fundraising goal for the year.

We hope to raise enough to cover the cost of airfare and half the cost of registration for each child.  The parents will need to cover the cost of half the registration and transportation from the airport to the camp for the children.  This assumes we meet our fundraising goal.  If we don’t, we will cover as much as we can for each child on an equal basis.

If you would like to donate toward the scholarship program, please mark you check “children’s scholarship program.”  We will also be holding a garage sale on April 12 so be sure to start saving any items you might like to donate.

We will wrap up our fundraising efforts either when we get to goal or on April 31, whichever comes first.  If we go over goal, the funds will be donated to the SRF How-to-Live Youth Program in Los Angeles so that other children across the country may benefit from them.  As per Mother Center’s guidance, we will not carry funds over to the following year.  If you have any questions about the program, please speak to Wendy MacDonald Savoy.

“The love of God cannot be described. But it can be felt as the heart is purified and made constant. As the mind and the feeling are directed inward, you begin to feel His joy.  The pleasures of the senses do not last; but the joy of God is everlasting. It is incomparable!”     - Paramahansa Yogananda

We are affiliated with Self-Realization Fellowship in Los Angeles, California. Our Guru is Paramahansa Yogananda. The purpose of Self-Realization Fellowship is to disseminate a knowledge of definite scientific techniques for attaining direct personal experience of God. The Fellowship is dedicated to promoting a greater understanding and harmony among the world's various religions by teaching the fundamental principle of religion: how to commune personally with God.
Paramahansa Yogananda has defined Self-realization as follows: "Self-realization is the knowing—in body, mind, and soul—that we are one with the omnipresence of God; that we do not have to pray that it come to us, that we are not merely near it at all times, but that God’s omnipresence is our omnipresence; that we are just as much a part of Him now as we ever will be. All we have to do is improve our knowing.
